Even if they are conscious of Tony’s…shortcomings, they wish they had the sort of conviction and force of will that he had. *** on one side, I can see why people would idolize him. He is so focused on what is ahead (in front of him) that he neglects what is behind (his friends, his family, that hokey assassin who wears sunglasses at night) ** It’s very important that the way Tony dies is being shot in the back. When Michelle Pfeiffer talks, you listen. Fourthly, getting high on your own supply. Obviously they don’t care about being surreptitious or their lives so they could have walked over to Tony and shot him point blank, he was so wasted. Thirdly, worst assassination attempt ever (in the club). Firstly, a drug deal stickup over a measly 5k barely warrants death by chainsaw (which would never be any intelligent mobster’s first choice - but none of these guys really are intelligent, are they?) Secondly, if your banker says you’re giving him too much money for him to wash, listen to the guy! There’s a reason there’s no statute of limitation on both murder and tax evasion. * Let’s talk for a second about how poorly the miami cocaine business is run in the context of this movie. He has driven away the things that truly matter - the nurture of friends and family - for what? Money and power are both illusory and fleeting when you start the cocaine train you better have an exit plan.***

Watching this film at a point in my life where I have nothing to prove, the only feelings I have for Tony Montoya is pity. The synth music by Moroder matches the druggy, surreal, cocaine-fueled mess and was as integral to the final product as Pacino. Designer suits are drenched in constant sweat and the film constantly pulses with a gilded sort of tension. The Miami that dePalma portrays is fantastic - dirty, gritty, cheap and technicolored.

Also, drugs are bad (mkay?)īut one can see how the lessons that many walk out of the movie are instead - live free, don’t snitch, get money, bang women, and die hard ‘cause The Man is gonna shoot you in the back.**

Which of course could be argued is the moral of the film - if you’re steadfast and unmoving, the rest of the world will move on without you, and the control you try so hard to exercise will slip through your fingers. While he is able to deliver such memorable zingers as “First you get the money…” and “Say hello to my little friend,” he is less able to do more important things such as:

Now out of my teenage years and viewing this for the first time, I can see why kids liked it so much and why it was criticized so heavily when it came out, then came back in vogue once the parent’s kids grew up.Īl Pacino gives a riveting, compelling, iconic performance as a man whose personal code is so strict and unforgiving he’s got less free will than a dog (much to the chainsaw’d chagrin of his buddy Angel).

I got that same feeling, so strongly, after watching the 1983 Scarface.

Impressionable young suburban teens want to be gangsters from the street - who doesn’t? I got that feeling after watching movies such as Fist of Fury, The Godfather, Boyz from the Hood, Goodfellas, The Fast and the Furious… you get the idea. You ever watch a movie and then have the realization that, “Oh, so that’s why a bunch of people act like this”?
